Below see one of our latest columns about freedom and liberty. Please feel free to comment Bob@ThinkAboutFreedom.org Should we blame the Liberals? First of
all, let us try to agree on some
definitions. For years now the media and folks from different political
viewpoints have tried to redefine key terms such as Liberalism and
Conservatism. Many have tried to separate Democrat and Republican,
from
Liberal and Conservative. This word game they have been playing is just
that, a
game. For the
sake of this discussion lets agree on a
few basic assumptions, one that most Democrats are Liberal, and two
that most
Republicans are Conservative. Now having said that, we know that some
Democrats
have what some might say are conservative opinions on a particular
subject,
like for instance gay marriage, there can be no doubt that many
Democrats do
not support gay marriage, and certainly not all support sweeping gun
laws as
another example. And many Republicans support far more government and
laws etc.
that impact personal liberty and our economics, that I personally
believe are
radically opposite of what is generally considered a conservative
viewpoint. Otherwise
saying, most people aren’t totally true to either ideal. I
don’t think modern
Liberalism is the great evil on our political landscape that many say
it is.
What I do believe is that it isn’t Liberalism that’s
hurting us as much, as
it’s a true lack of Conservatism that is doing most of the harm
in the United
States today, both to Liberty and in our financial sectors. One thing
hurting us can be best summed up in
this endless blame game. The so-called right blaming the so-called left
and the
left blaming the right. When the truth is both have factored in the
current
problems that we face …from the bail out package …to the
war in Iraq…to a
significant erosion of personal liberty and freedom here in the United
States. How many
so-called liberals voted for The
Patriot Act? How many voted to let us invade Iraq? In numerous
conversations with so-called
Liberals, I’ll ask their opinion on abortion rights, as a common
cause for the
Liberal crowd, almost universally they support a women’s right to
choose, I’ll
ask them why and most say it is her body and she should have the right
to make
that choice. But when I ask them about laws that I see as attacks on
ones
personal liberty such as the seatbelt law, they nearly always support
that law.
I ask them, what is the difference? it’s her body and choice to
end a life, in
my car, it’s my body and my choice, and clearly most of the time
it wouldn’t
end a life. One is a liberty allowed by Supreme Court
intervention, the
other was a liberty or choice we as citizens wrongly allowed to be
taken away.
But clearly it’s a good example of liberals not living up to
their own highest
ideals of individual rights and choices. In one case
it may end a life, in the other… it definitely
will end a life. |
